Protecting the Skin You’re In: A Hunter Perspective on Firefighter Health
At Hunter Apparel Solutions Limited (Hunter), we are a purpose-led, technology-driven company committed to protecting those on whom society depends. Our innovations, such as the Deconology® LCO₂+ decontamination system, HunterPAC® our digital portal and HunterCARE® our technology driven laundry, exemplify our dedication to safety, sustainability, and technological advancement.
Understanding the Risk: Firefighters and Cancer
Firefighters face numerous hazards, and one of the most insidious is the increased risk of cancer due to prolonged exposure to carcinogens. Contaminants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals, and PFAS adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) and these contaminants can transfer to the skin, especially when it’s warm or moist which causes an open pathway for these carcinogens to enter firefighter’s bloodstream, and regular exposure can increase the likelihood of developing cancer.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies exposure to occupational combustion byproducts as a Group 1 carcinogen, indicating a definitive link to cancer in humans. Moreover, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports higher rates of certain cancers, including skin cancer, among firefighters compared to the general population.
Proactive Measures for Skin Protection:
In light of these risks, it’s imperative to adopt proactive measures to safeguard skin health for firefighters:
· Thorough Decontamination of PPE: Soot and smoke residues carry carcinogens that cling to gear and can transfer to the skin. Implementing on-scene decontamination followed by routine deep cleaning is essential.
· Advanced Cleaning Technologies: Traditional water-based cleaning methods may not effectively remove all contaminants. Hunter’s Deconology® LCO₂+ system according to NFPA testing can eliminate over 99% of harmful substances from PPE without compromising the fire kit’s integrity.
· Use an effective undergarment – Hunter are the exclusive distributor to the UK and Irish markets for CPP undergarments a Swedish innovator in protective undergarments designed specifically for firefighters using tried and tested CBRN fabric technology to prevent carcinogens reaching the skin.
· Regular Skin Examinations: Incorporating dermatological checks into annual health assessments can aid in early detection and treatment of skin anomalies.
